well, may be not for human kind, but at least for me!

Today, after about 250 problems, for the first time I went below the 1500 mark - 1498, obtained by not recognizing a simple mate in 3...

Look like I am getting worse rather than better...  Cry

But I am sure there is still hope!  Undecided

I had a similar day a week or so ago, where I missed 19 straight problems  Shocked > Sad

However, I came back and refocused and am now at my highest standard rating ever after much work.  I have noticed that if I start missing a few problems, inevitably I miss like 5 in a row, and many times on what, at least to my amateurish eyes, appears to be equitable moves.  I also notice if I miss a few, I start moving faster, inevitably missing more because I'm being careless.  Now I tend to take a break if I notice that i'm starting to be careless.

andreacoda and cymorg:

There definitely appears to be an optimal 'give up for this session' point.  I usually only recognize it in hindsight :-)  Towards the end of session , I have trouble saying no to the little voice which seductively insists, "only a few in a row right and you'll get all those lost rating points back." :-)

having quit yesterday on the high note of solving a 2000 rated problem and reaching a new high, i started today losing 10 points so fast i was appropriately humiliated again .. i swallowed my cowboy pride and remembered to SLOW DOWN and focus on really seeing a solution .. that approach has really helped me and i'm proud to report i was net +10 by the end of the session, another high at 1560!

while i blew away two hours on only 18 problems, the process of visualizing the board, studying and often commenting on the ones i miss, occasionally analyzing with Fritz, considering tags, etc., has me feeling comfortable about my learning curve for the first time since i've begun re-learning the game only a month ago today

of course, i've had similar days where i've worked hundreds of problems .. there does seem to be a very real point of diminishing returns, but it can be a fun way to wile away a few hours .. i remember one sleepless night at CTS when my eyes were bloodshot for two days afterwards .. i try to avoid nights like that these days, the hangover can be severe  Roll Eyes

andreacoda, I would pat yourself on the back!  After doing 250 in a day.  Your rating may have dropped because you were tiered.  I think you did great, congratulations.  Question?  how long did it take to complete 250?  I have a new computer and the time it takes to reload a new problem is pushing 20 sec. Cheesy time for a (B).  This was my first day.  I just found the site, it should prove to be an asset.  Thanks to the developers.  cheers,

Ehm ehm, actually it was not 250 in a day, it was 250 total... I am very slow in resolving problems (like 3/4 minutes each), and I try to balance the (little) daily available time between tactics and on line game.

However, I will take the pat on the back anyway  Tongue

Cheers,

Andrea

If your solving problems on standard mode I suggest using more then 3-4 min i usually never take less then 5 min on a problem unless it is easy or I have solved it before. My standard rating is 2400 and i never make a move unless im 100% positive with it.

Andrea, the 'problems' you've been working on involve only hanging pieces and 1 or 2 movers. Often you're just playing too fast (using only a few seconds) before observing the whole board and all the pieces on it.

So you didn't really "blow away" two hours, you spent two hours on decent study which resulted in greater confidence!  Well done!
