Hello all;

I really love this site. I just got to 1630 rating with 57% correct. But I have question.

I wanted to ask as to how does the system decide how many points you gain or lose depending on weather you get it right or wrong. For example, there are several problems on which I got zero points when I get it correct but I lose 4 or 5 points when I get it wrong. so how does it decide?? Thanks.

Hi BeeJee,

The rating systems is based on the Glicko method of ratings.  The blitz ratings mode modifies the Glicko method so that the time you take is also reflected in the rating outcome.  If you take longer to solve the problem then the points for getting the problem correct are reduced.  If you take too long then you will get no points.  There are a few more details in the FAQ section on how the rating system works.

Regards,
Richard.

If you are on a Blitz rating position, and take (say) an hour, do you get 0 points or a negative amount of points?

You will likely get some amount of negative points.  It is possible to get negative points on any problem fairly quickly if most users had solved that problem much more quickly than you.  There is a cap however on how negative you can go.  You don't get any extra penalty after the first 5 minutes you have spent on a problem.

Richard.
