Are there many new problems added these few days? I come across more and more problems attempted 0 times or a few times probably by good players who got them right. So these problems are rated  about 1700+, some even about 1500+, but are actually rather difficult! When I got these right my rating +0.5 approx, but when I got wrong oh no its -6 or 7.

Hi liky,

There was a big problem set update done yesterday, this removed about 5000 problems and added another 4000 new problems.  Unfortunately it will take a few days for the new problems to settle down to more reasonable ratings.  New problems do have a provisional rating system where the first time they are done you only get 20% of the rating adjustment (up or down), then 40% on the second time  etc up to 100% on the 5th and following tries.  This protects users a bit from the negative ratings impact of new problems but as you point out it is still not perfect. Overall the 4000 problems removed should show a positive increase in problem quality, so hopefully that balances out the negatives of the short term rating roller-coaster...

Richard.

Hi again liky,

I thought I'd just add that as well as underrated problems in the new set, there are also overrated problems the will take a few days to settle, so while you might lose points on some underrated problems you can gain points back on the overrated problems :-)

Richard.

Yes this is all true but right now i am just lossing points for playing in standard mode because all the problems i get give me +0.9 and if i get one wrong i loss -10, very depressing.

tama:  That's what happens when you get a high rating!  It's been like that for me for a long time.  For each problem I get wrong, I have to get 10 in a row correct.  It teaches you to be very careful, and to spend a lot of time on each problem.

Maybe the percentage adjustment could be spread out over the first 10 attempts, from 10% to 100%, instead of the first 5 attempts.

tama: As drahacik points out, this is just the way things work at the top of the ratings heap.  Due to not having enough very hard problems you are facing the equivalent of being a GM and playing in an under 1400 division.  In that situation you will get very little points for beating your opponent and lose lots of points if they beat you, it is the same here. The -10's you are getting have nothing to do with the new problem set, as they were all reasonably well established problems (so far).  When you do get the new problems wrong you'll lose a lot less than 10 due to the provisional rating system.  You probably are getting a few problems correct that you would have otherwise been getting a few more points for, as the provisional system cuts both ways.

newlook:  I think 5 is probably ok for now, usually ratings have approached something reasonable by 5 attempts and as tama points out it can be annoying to get problems correct with little reward so I'd rather not prolong things too much.
