I am very happy: I just resolved a problem rated 1842!

http://chesstempo.com/chess-problems/6045

I dwelled on it for about 3 minutes, considered a couple of (wrong) moves, then something clicked and I had the solution!

I guess you cannot care less - but I am just too happy and I wanted to share  Grin

andreacoda may need rating of more than 2300 to do it because I already got rating above 2300 in standard few minutes ago and I am not sure if it is going to be enough to be in the top 10 for a long time.

Other also improve their rating and the rating of place 10 improved from rating near 2200 few weeks ago to rating of 2270.

Note that my statistics is clearly wrong because I am place 7 in the active list but it is written that my best ranking was place 8.

Uri,

Your ranking in the 'best ranking' is calculated at the time you were active, you only went up to 7 because of the downward movement of others, if you do another problem and stay at 7 you should see that as your best.

Uri, I was just joking with andreacoda.  Don't be so serious.  Her Standard rating is 1600.

I think that people who are stuck at the level of 1600 standard need different type of training.

I suggest the following training
Before solving a problem take a pen and paper and simply write every legal move that you have.

I do not use a pen and paper but I trained myself to look at all the board  in my head many years ago and even in my case it is better if I do it in case of not finding a clear solution because I believe that I could avoid at least one of my failures simply by using this simple trick.

see http://chesstempo.com/chess-problems/43208

I did not solve it for the simple reason that I did not consider Qf4 and both checks seemed the same for me so I chose one of them when I guessed that there is some win that I do not see when it will be easier for me to see it later.

I feel sure that I could solve it in case of simply writing all the legal moves of white.
The problem is considered by me as an easy problem and the fact that people including me failed to solve it does not change my opinion about it.

For me hard problems are problems that even after considering the right move you simply underestimate it and consider it as bad or problems that there are many lines that you need to calculate.

As I am a lower ranked player, I can readily share your good feeling about this.  What may be easy for the top players can be quite hard for me, and I too feel good when I solve a problem that is well above my (very modest) rating.

It is about improvement, after all!

Uri

I see that my prediction was correct and now all the top 10 are with rating of at least 2300.

Meaning "also-rans" like me will probably have to wait for a few of you guys to either screw up and plummet, or go inactive so the RD threshold makes you invisible to the top-10 list.   Smiley

Actually it's pretty neat-o to see the lowest top-10 rating go persistently upward, since it would seem to mean a) the site is attracting more & more strong players, or b) the existing players keep learning & soaring higher, or both!  (I hope it's not just the tail end of the upward rating drift phenomenon that began when alts were introduced in the summer.)
