Hello!

It's an excellent site, but since one month I have a strange problem. After solving standard problems, somtimes it happens, that the screen is freezing and the correct solved problem doesn't get filed in the standard ranking in the right upper corner and the screen doesn't change for minutes. The only way to continue, is to click on the "solve tactics" button, but even then I don't come further.  After a time it becomes quite frustration, not to get earned points.

Is this a general problem caused by a server overload, a problem with my IE 6 or the connection (which in my view seems to be quite stable).?

Regards

Hi Thomas,

I'm sorry to hear you are having problems.  Its hard to tell from the details exactly what is going wrong here.  The server appears to be very stable in terms of staying up (its been up nearly 200 days at the moment) and load (at least when I check).  One possibility is that the server loses network connectivity (at the server's end, not yours), so your update gets lost.  It may also be that I have bugs in the javascript that misbehave occaisonally on IE 6.  I do most of my own testing under Firefox but do try to test under other browsers before uploading significant changes, although I may not test enough on IE 6 to uncover a bug that may occur only rarely.

I believe IE 6 has a user preference you can turn on to get more error reporting from javascript, if you could turn this on and see if you are getting any javascript errors during these problems that would be useful for me.

Another thing worth doing is attempting to ping (with the ping command in a command window, i.e. ping chesstempo.com) the site to see if you can still reach it via the network (and maybe also ping google.com if you can't, to make sure its my host and not your network).

If you can also give me the exact time (and your timezone) at which the problem occurs then I can look at the logs for that period and see if there is anything unusual there.

As I haven't uploaded any new UI code in the last month (or two) its most likely something has changed at your end [for example one user found that their ISP was using a proxy which would sometimes rewrite the actual javascript code when passing through their proxy] (it still may well be a bug in my code, that is only brought under some new conditions existing at your end).

Anyways, hopefully we can track the issue down and fix it :-)

Regards,
Richard.

Hellstaff,

I used to use IE also, but had problems on other websites with different things...Have you ever considered trying Firefox? I like it soooo much better than IE, and it is free...

Maybe you could try it with firefox and see if you get better performance?

Here is a link to mozilla firefox:

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

Good luck I hope you get your problem fixed!!!

Thanks for the report.  I'll be doing some more work on the UI next month so hopefully I can take a closer look at what is happening on IE6.

Regards,
Richard.
