I sometimes miss that I'm in check and play an otherwise legal move. Its nice that don't get failed for this. But think should, too punish me for being silly   Cool

Hi pollock,

This was part of the major UI update last month.  The main thinking behind not punishing illegal moves was that often an illegal move could be the result of a slip of the mouse so legality checking on moves at least reduces the chance of mouse slips resulting in failed problems (of course it doesn't help when the mouse slips over a valid square :-)  ).

Having had a mouse slip result in a failed problem, I like the upgrade.  I've also had failed ones when I didn't notice I was in check.  Not sure Ive come across that with the new upgrade.  While one shoud take in the entire situation when solving, if trying to do problems fast one might overlook some key aspects of the problem.  As for trying to simulate real-life situations, one disadvantage of problems is you're thrown into the middle of the game.  In real-life you exactly know the situation.  Here less so.  I think the move list will help alert to those initial check situations.

CTS penalizes for illegal moves and it is very frustrating.  For example, assume you're in an insane hurry, and you drop the piece on an impossible square. With CTS, it is a fail.  Infuriating.  Angry

Yay ChessTempo for keeping it fun!  Grin

For clarification, an impossible move being a fail is annoying (Be1-e2.)  Moving into check could be a fail as it represents a chess error, not a mouse-typo.

Maybe, but you can't make such a move in real-life, so a failure would represent another difference from reality.  It is likely harder to evaluate the type of illegal move anyway.  How do you determine what is a mouse slip and what isn't.

I could go either way on this, but I have had it (mouse slip) happen to me (and lost points).  I was my fault though as I was getting lazy all slouched down and such.

The olde mouse-slip was a bigger problem for me at CTS where the boards are smaller and the play is insanely faster.
