Mommy, where do subthreads come from?

How does a Forum thread split into those little numbers << 1 2 3 4 >> ?
(Is it someone with a very fine razor blade?)
When you "Show unread posts since last visit" and those numbers appear, how do you know which subthreads have new posts?
Thanks.

revenant, those little numbers aren't subthreads. They are pages. Each topic has a limit of 15 posts on one page, then subsequent posts go on page 2, etc. Newest stuff is on the last page (4 in your example). But there might be some posts you have not read yet on the previous page too (3 in your example) if people are posting too much stuff like me.
