should clicking "back" fail the problem?

After the first move I clicked the back arrow because I wanted to review the move order. Should this be considered failing? Why not blank the back arrow out if it is not meant to be used during solving.

I'm glad you confirmed this. I've always figured that would be the result. I agree that the navigation buttons should be inoperable if they will fail the problem. A "show solution" button could be added to make it clear that you've given up.
One thing I've thought would be nice is the ability to replay the moves you've made so far. This would be especially good for seeing the opponent's first move again which sometime I miss or forget. Yes I can turn on the last move highlight but I find it distracting (perhaps a different highlight color or style such as an outlined square would make it better).

I'll have to have a think about the best way of doing this. I like the way that going forward is a short cut to giving up, but I can see that going back should not be seen as wrong. I think that disabling the back button while the problem is live, but providing an optional move list in the display might be the best way to go here. Allowing back has a few complexities I'd rather not expose the user (or myself on the coding side) to.
Unfortunately there are quite a few things above this in priority at the moment so it will be a while before something like this sees the light of day.
Regards,
Richard.

Yes, a display of the move list would be very useful. People often make mistakes in the comments (b3 instead of g6, for example), and they don't include any move numbers, (2...Nxf6 for example) so it would make it easier to write understandable comments.

Id like a list of the moves too actually... and maybe just a 1.Nf5 or 1...Bxf5 notation at the top of the board for the users that DONT like the highlights.
That would be awesome. Please consider thanks.
